Why I Created a Personal Facebook Page and Limit My Facebook Profile to Close Friends and Family
I don't accept many friend requests on Facebook. It's the way I like to use it, and it makes it more enjoyable for me.
But I created a personal Facebook page for myself, so I have some way to connect with people who want to connect with me, but who I don't personally know (and who speak English, not Finnish).
First, it felt strange. You know, personal "fan pages" should be for superstars, celebrities and TV survivalists... not for some geeky computer guys from Finland like me, right?
As you know, I'm just a normal fellow from Finland, I'm not famous or anything, and even making a page felt weird at first. Luckily they are not called "fan pages" anymore, just pages.
Why a Personal Facebook Page?
I created a personal Facebook page, so I have a way to keep in touch with everyone on Facebook.
You see, I have chosen to keep my personal Facebook profile limited to my close friends and family. I haven't accepted friend requests from "strangers" and I never will.
This is why I created the "personal" page, so I have the means to keep others who want to connect with me updated. Plus it gives me a chance to connect and share stuff in English (personal profile is fully in Finnish).

Personal Profile or Pages?
Last year, I hadn't seen too many "non-famous" people create pages for themselves, but now, more and more people have a page for their website or business.
It's very HOT to create a Facebook page for your business right now (rightfully so). If a business doesn't have, that business is losing the game.
For people like me, who run a personal blog (at http://anttikokkonen.com, which actually redirects to http://zemalf.com), the page for me and a page for the site are pretty much the same thing.
On the other hand, I see a lot of people with thousands of "friends" in their personal profile. For me, most of those "friends" seem more like "fans", don't you agree?
With that said... I think everyone should
- create a personal Facebook page for themselves to connect with people they don't feel comfortable accepting as friends for personal profile
- keep their personal profile "clean", limited for close friends and family
- create a facebook page for all their businesses and/or websites
What do You Think?
Do you think it's good idea to create personal page just to keep your personal profile to the closest friends and family?
- Do you have a Facebook fan page for yourself?
- ...or do you have one just for your website / business?
- ...or are you just using your personal profile for everything?
p.s. In case you missed it, I do not accept personal friend requests in Facebook, since I have limited my personal profile in Facebook for close friends and family, plus I keep the personal profile in Finnish. But EVERYONE is welcome to connect to me via my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/zemalf :)
